SHALLOTTE, NC

The Brunswick Beacon, a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 13,500, is looking for 
an editor. The paper is based in Shallotte, NC, and serves Brunswick County. The area is 
relatively rural and features miles of beautiful beaches, countless golf courses and world-
class saltwater fishing. Myrtle Beach. S.C. and Wilmington, N.C., each about 30 miles 
from Shallotte, offers an array of cultural activities including museums, live 
entertainment and nightlife. The newspaper earned first place for General Excellence in 
the North Carolina Press Association contest and has been honored repeatedly by LCNI 
and the National Newspaper Association. The editor is responsible for the day-to-day 
operations of the news department, including supervision of three full-time staff writers, 
sports editor, news clerk, page designer and several local contributors.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Minimum five years journalism experience; proficient in both team leadership 
and hands-on journalism
* Proven organizational skills
* Ability to recruit and retain personnel
* Strong editing, writing and photography skills
* Innovative and efficient in laying out pages and writing headlines
* Commitment to quality in all aspects, from news coverage to design
* Strong news judgment
* Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word and InDesign
* Operational knowledge of Internet and web-based content

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Direct news coverage and story development for staff 
* Plan and execute successfully for the newspaper as well as special sections and 
online content
* Exercise commitment to quality to improve content, presentation and 
packaging of the news product and service to readers
* Edit and proofread submitted as well as staff written copy
* Handle front page design and layout as well as layout for inside pages and 
pagination
* Write weekly editorial
* Coach and develop staff
* Actively participate in and take a leadership role in community functions and 
events
* Listen and respond to reader and non-reader needs and expectations
* Coordinate news coverage with ATMC-TV for weekly news program
