From a small printing cooperative formed by Kentucky community publishers has grown a nationwide media company with publications from Florida to Iowa and from New Mexico to Maryland. Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc. traces its history to eight small-town publishers who pooled resources to build an offset printing plant in Shelbyville, KY.

The cooperative soon incorporated as Newspapers, Inc. and began acquiring other newspapers. By 1973 it had 18 newspapers and four printing plants. Its record growth made it an attractive acquisition for Landmark Communications, Inc. (LCI), a diverse media company based in Norfolk, VA

.
In 30 years the small Kentucky cooperative has grown to 19 printing plants and over 115 publications with newspapers, shoppers and other specialty publications including Cats’ Pause and other sports publications plus The Trucker, operating in 17 states. At the same time its parent company has continued to diversify. LCNI owns three metro dailies serving Norfolk and Roanoke, VA and Greensboro, NC; and The Weather Channel headquartered in Atlanta, GA; television stations in Las Vegas, NV and Nashville, TN; other specialty publications and magazines; has 50% ownership in Trader Publishing Company with auto and classified publications.
